Genre Savvied is committed to providing high-quality editorial services and client satisfaction. This terms of services outlines the services, client responsibilities, delivery, revisions, refunds, liability, dispute resolution and more. Please note: I cannot guarantee sales (for indie authors) or publication (for authors who want to go the traditional route).
1. Services Provided
Genre Savvied provides professional editing services for speculative fiction manuscripts, including but not limited to developmental editing, one-on-one coaching, copyediting, and proofreading. All services are performed by myself.
2. Client Responsibilities
Manuscript Submission: Clients must provide manuscripts in an agreed-upon digital format (typically Microsoft Word or Google Docs). Clients own all rights to the submitted material and by submission have given explicit permission to have it edited.
Payment: Payment terms will be specified in individual project agreements. A deposit of 50% of total payment is required before work begins, with final payment (other 50%) due upon completion, BEFORE final files are sent. Late payments may result in project delays or suspension of services.
Communication: Clients agree to respond to editorial queries and requests for clarification within reasonable time-frames (48-72 hours) to avoid project delays.
3. Intellectual Property
Client Ownership: All intellectual property rights in the manuscript remain with the client. Genre Savvied claims no ownership of client content.
Confidentiality: Genre Savvied agrees to maintain strict confidentiality regarding all client manuscripts and will not share, discuss, or reproduce client work without explicit written permission.
Editorial Contributions: Editorial suggestions, corrections, and improvements are considered part of the editing service and do not create any ownership rights for Genre Savvied.
4. Project Timeline and Delivery
Timelines: Project timelines will be established in individual agreements. Genre Savvied will make reasonable efforts to meet agreed-upon deadlines but is not liable for delays caused by circumstances beyond my control.
Delivery: Completed work will be delivered in the format specified in the project agreement, typically via email or shared document platforms.
5. Revisions and Satisfaction
Included Revisions: Each service level includes a specified number of revision rounds. Additional revisions beyond the agreed scope may incur additional charges.
Quality Guarantee: If a client is unsatisfied with the quality of work, Genre Savvied will work in good faith to address legitimate concerns within the scope of the original agreement.
6. Cancellation and Refunds
Client Cancellation: Clients may cancel projects with written notice. Refunds of deposits are available up to the point that work hasn’t been started on the project. After work has started, deposits are non-refundable. More information is provided here.
Editor Cancellation: Genre Savvied reserves the right to terminate projects that involve content that violates our editorial standards or if payment terms are not met.
7. Limitation of Liability
Genre Savvied’s liability is limited to the total amount paid for services rendered. I are not responsible for any indirect, consequential, or punitive damages. Editorial services are provided “as is” and we make no guarantees regarding publication success or market reception.
8. Professional Standards
Genre Savvied adheres to professional editing standards and ethical guidelines. We reserve the right to decline projects that contain content we deem inappropriate, including but not limited to material that promotes hate speech, illegal activities, or violates our professional standards.
9. Dispute Resolution
Any disputes arising from these terms will be resolved through good faith negotiation. If necessary, disputes will be subject to binding arbitration in accordance with the laws of North Dakota.
10. Modifications
These terms may be updated periodically. Clients will be notified of significant changes. Continued use of services after modifications constitutes acceptance of updated terms.
